Clove (Laung) for Cough and Throat Pain
Sucking a clove numbs a sore throat within minutes. What that does, and what it does not do.

A clove tucked against the sore side of the throat works faster than anything else in the kitchen. Understanding why it works also tells you exactly how far it goes.
🌱 What Goes In, and Why
- Clove: eugenol, which dulls the nerve endings it touches.
- Black Pepper: for the warm version, a sharp note that carries.
- Honey: holds the clove flavour and coats on the way down.
🌿 Ingredients
- 1–2 whole cloves, for sucking
- For a warm cup: 2 cloves, 3–4 peppercorns, 1 cup water
- 1 tsp honey (optional)
🥄 How to Use Laung
- The quick way: hold one whole clove against the sore patch and let it soften. Do not chew it to pieces.
- The warm way: crush 2 cloves and the peppercorns, simmer in 1 cup water 5 minutes.
- Strain, cool to warm, and stir in honey if you want it.
- Sip slowly, or gargle a mouthful before swallowing.
🍵 Dosage
- Adults: 2–3 cloves a day at most, spread out; one warm cup in the evening.
- Children (above 5 yrs): the warm cup only, well diluted — never a loose clove to suck.
🕒 When to Use
- The moment a specific patch of throat starts to hurt.
- Late at night, when the pain is what is keeping you awake.
🦷 Numbing Is Not Curing
The relief a clove gives is real, and it is worth understanding because it explains the limits. Eugenol, the oil that gives clove its smell, is a local anaesthetic — the same property that put it in dentists' cabinets long before it was named. Held against a raw patch of throat it dulls the nerve endings, and the soreness fades for a while. What it does not do is touch whatever is causing the soreness. Nothing about a clove shortens a cold or clears an infection. That is a reasonable thing to want at two in the morning, but it should not be mistaken for getting better.
✅ Benefits
- May dull throat pain quickly, which can be the difference between sleeping and not.
- Useful precisely because it is fast and temporary — a bridge to morning, not a course of treatment.
⚠️ Precautions
- Clove oil is far more concentrated than a whole clove. Not for children, and never applied undiluted inside the mouth.
- A loose clove is a choking risk for small children; give them the diluted warm cup instead.
- If the pain returns the moment the clove is out, every time, the throat needs looking at rather than more numbing.
- Medicinal-strength clove is best avoided in pregnancy without a doctor’s guidance.
