⚠️ The Yellow Layer Is the Part That Matters
Between the green rind and the clear gel sits a thin film of bitter yellow sap. That is the latex, and it carries aloin — a strong stimulant laxative, and something quite different from the gel it clings to.
Which makes the rinsing step more important than it looks. After peeling, stand the cut leaf upright for ten minutes so the yellow sap drains away, then rinse the gel under running water until no bitterness is left. If it still tastes bitter, there is still latex on it.
Taken repeatedly, aloin brings cramping and loose motions, and the bowel can come to depend on it. That, rather than anything about the gel, is the real reason for the two-to-three-week limit above.
⚠️ Precautions
- Avoid during pregnancy & breastfeeding.
- Overuse may cause loose motions.
- Always use fresh gel and avoid the yellow latex (can be harsh on stomach).
- People with IBS or severe gastric issues should consult a doctor before use.
