A simple yet powerful Ayurvedic drink combining buttermilk and hing (asafoetida) for natural digestive relief.
🌱 Why this works
- Buttermilk: Light on the stomach, cools the digestive tract, supports gut flora.
- Hing (Asafoetida): Reduces gas, bloating, and stimulates digestive enzymes.
- Cumin: Enhances absorption and adds flavor.
🌿 Ingredients
- 1 cup Buttermilk
- A pinch of Hing (asafoetida)
- ½ tsp Roasted Cumin Powder
- A pinch of Black Salt (optional)
🥄 How to Make Buttermilk with Hing
- Take 1 cup buttermilk in a glass.
- Add hing, roasted cumin powder, and a little black salt.
- Mix well until blended.
- Drink fresh after meals.
👉 Best for: Indigestion, bloating, heaviness after meals, and mild acidity.
🕐 When to drink it
Ayurveda is specific about timing here. Takra — thin, churned buttermilk — is treated as a daytime drink, best with or just after the midday meal, when digestion is at its strongest. Ashtanga Hridaya advises against taking it at night, and against it in autumn, when Pitta already runs high.
Two practical points the recipe assumes. Use fresh chaas, not lassi: chaas is curd thinned with water and churned, while lassi is thicker and usually sweetened. And the hing goes in raw here — this is one of the few preparations where it is not bloomed in hot ghee first, so use a smaller pinch than you would for a tempering.
✅ Benefits
- Relieves gas, acidity, and bloating.

⚠️ Precautions
- Avoid consuming in excess (more than 2 cups daily).
- People allergic to dairy should not consume buttermilk.
- Those with low blood pressure should use hing in moderation.
