Fennel (saunf) is a traditional digestive spice in Ayurveda. Its tea is light, soothing, and effective against gas, bloating, and acidity.
🌱 Why It Works
- Fennel seeds: Carminative in nature, reduce gas and bloating.
- Coolant effect that helps balance stomach acidity.
- A crushed pod of cardamom in the same cup rounds off the fennel’s sweetness and is a common addition after a heavy meal.
🥄 How to Make
- Boil 1 tsp fennel seeds in 2 cups of water for 5–7 minutes.
- Strain and drink warm.
- Optionally, add a few mint leaves for extra freshness.
🍵 Dosage
- Adults: 1 cup after heavy meals or twice a day.
- Children (above 5 yrs): ½ cup.
🕒 When to Use
- After heavy or oily meals
- During acidity or gas discomfort
- To freshen breath naturally
✅ Benefits
- Relieves gas and bloating

- Improves digestion after meals
- Freshens breath
🍵 Crush the seeds first
Most households drop the seeds in whole. The tea still tastes of saunf, but weakly — the flavour and the carminative oils, chiefly anethole, sit inside the seed coat, and a whole seed gives them up slowly.
Press the teaspoon of seeds once in a mortar, or just under the back of a spoon, before they go into the pan. You are not grinding them to powder; the coats only need to break. The same 5–7 minutes then produces a noticeably stronger cup.
Keep the pan covered while it simmers, for the same reason — anethole is volatile, and an open pan sends most of it into the kitchen rather than the cup.
🌿 Saunf, Ajwain or Jeera?
Indian kitchens keep all three and often reach for whichever jar is nearest, but they are not quite the same tool.
- Saunf (fennel) is the cooling one, and the usual choice when the discomfort runs towards acidity or heat after a heavy meal.
- Ajwain is sharp and warming — traditionally used when the trouble is heaviness and trapped gas rather than burning.
- Jeera sits between the two and is the mildest of the three, which is why jeera water tends to be the first thing offered for an unsettled stomach.
⚠️ Precautions
- Excess use may lower blood pressure.
- Avoid if allergic to fennel.
- Pregnant women should consult a doctor before daily use.
