🍋 Why Reflux Is the Exception
The precaution below deserves explaining, because mint seems like the last thing that could cause trouble.
Mint relaxes smooth muscle. That is precisely what settles a cramping gut — and precisely what you do not want at the valve between the stomach and the food pipe. Loosen that, and acid travels back up more easily. For ordinary bloating mint is close to ideal; for heartburn it can make matters worse.
Lemon deserves a word too. It leaves tooth enamel briefly softened, so rinse with plain water afterwards and leave brushing for half an hour rather than scrubbing at enamel in that state.
⚠️ Precautions
- Avoid excess lemon if you have sensitive teeth or ulcers.
- Not suitable for people with severe acid reflux.
- Use fresh mint leaves, not dried.
